LAST STAND by Joshua Hoffine |
Joshua Hoffine creates photographs that explore the complex nature of fear. 99% of what you see in his works is captured in camera. He and his team spend weeks carefully constructing sets and perfecting makeup effects so that virtually no post production work - i.e., Photoshop - is needed. Everything is staged like a real movie with costumes and elaborate props. All of his attention to detail definitely pays off. Joshua's horror photography has been featured in numerous publications and in galleries around the world. We are excited to have played a part in Joshua's latest feature photograph. His makeup team - long time Mehron FX artist Meagan Hester and FACE OFF winner J. Anthony Kosar - reached out to us to assist with Joshua's special effects makeup needs for the project titled LAST STAND.
This fantastic photograph was part of a show called Zombie at the Last Rites gallery in New York City, which featured hand selected artists whose works represented were their interpretation the eery word. Joshua created his LAST STAND, which he admits is by far his largest project to date, for the show. The photo depicts a terrified family immediately before they are consumed by a hoard of zombies. The central figure is the father who was played by Phantasm's A. Michael Baldwin. The photograph is very ambitions as over a dozen characters interacted at once while the set was destroyed by a "gunshot" and fake blood.
To set the scene, Joshua built the realistic set at the 3rd Street Asylum Haunted House in Bonner Springs, Kansas. Then came the makeup for the gory shot! The special effects team was led by J. Anthony, whose appliances were utterly amazing! Together with Meagan, the makeup for each of the zombies was second to none.
